UK: Betting and Gaming Council introduce new rules around social media accounts

(London).- A body comprising many of the UK’s biggest gambling companies has drawn up new rules to prevent football clubs from using their official social media accounts to promote gambling offers.
While the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC’s) new code of conduct has been welcomed by campaigners, the body has no jurisdiction over the mysterious offshore gambling companies which sponsor many Premier League clubs, so will have limited impact.
The BGC includes many of the companies best known to UK consumers like William Hill and Bet365.
The new code of conduct will not allow members to link to gambling sites on football clubs’ “organic tweets” (as opposed to “age-gated” paid advertising).
For example, a recent tweet by Tottenham Hotspur carried a direct link to a William Hill page giving odds for the upcoming match.
Tweets like this will be no more from March 1.
